For most of us, the office is our home away from home.  We spend a good chunk of our week there and are quite likely to be in the office when a natural disaster strikes.  I know, it isn’t very fun to think about earthquakes, tornados, winter storms and power outages, but it should be a great comfort to know that you are prepared for one at the office.  Emergency services and government agencies may not be able to respond immediately to your needs. History has shown time and again that people who prepare experience less disruption when emergencies occur, and are able to resume their lives more quickly than those who do not prepare.


Preparing for emergencies takes only a few hours a year. Being prepared can save your life, minimize damage to your property, and help you recover more quickly following an emergency.  It is not difficult to put together an office 72 hour kit and every employee should have one.   Below are some ideas for an office emergency kit that were found on the Emergency Management website for Whatcom County, WA.


Pack in a portable, weather-resistant container (backpacks work well). Every employee should have a kit that includes at least one each of the items identified with an asterisk.

  • Aluminum foil
  • Antacid tablets
  • Aspirin & non-aspirin pain relievers *

  • Change of clothing *
  • Chlorine bleach
  • Comfort items – Books, cards, hard candy *

If you do not have the resources to put together an emergency kit right away, start out small by bringing a few items every week.  If you have a spare drawer in your file cabinet, start bringing nonperishable items, bottled water, etc.  Whatever may come, it is a comfort to know that you will be able to sustain yourself in an emergency situation.
